What is
ceramic coating?

The short version: it is a liquid that cures into a hard, glass-like layer bonded into your paint — not a wax sitting on top of it. Here is what that actually means, and how to tell a real coating from a bottle that just calls itself one.

The one-sentence definition

A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer you apply to clean paint that chemically cures into a thin, hard, transparent layer bonded to the surface. Once it cures, it resists UV fade, chemical etching, water spotting, and the light scratching that dulls a finish over time — and it stays there for years instead of washing off.

Coating vs. wax vs. sealant.

These three get lumped together and they are not the same thing.

• Wax is a sacrificial top layer. It looks great for a few weeks, then washes away. You are re-applying it constantly.
• Sealant is a synthetic step up from wax — a few months of protection, still sitting on the surface.
• Ceramic coating bonds to the paint and measures its life in years, not weeks. It is the difference between a coat of polish and a layer that becomes part of the surface.

The chemistry, without the jargon.

The strongest coatings are built on polysilazane. In plain terms, polysilazane reacts with moisture in the air and with the paint itself to form a bonded, silica-based matrix — it grows into the surface rather than drying on top of it. That bond is why a real coating cannot simply wash off.

What it actually does for you.

• Washing gets easier. Dirt and water release instead of clinging, so a wash takes roughly half the time.
• The finish stays put. UV, acid rain, bird droppings, and tree sap wipe off instead of etching in.
• The gloss holds. A coated car keeps looking new for years — whether you keep it or hand it back.

What a coating does not do: make paint scratch-proof, replace paint correction on an already-swirled finish, or survive an automatic brush wash forever. It is protection and easier upkeep, not armor.

DIY bottle vs. professional application.

You can buy a ceramic spray at a parts store and wipe it on. It will bead water for a while. But the durable, warrantied coatings are a different category: they require the paint to be decontaminated and corrected first, applied in a controlled environment, and left to cure. That is why a real coating is applied by a trained technician — the prep is most of the work, and it is the part a driveway bottle skips.
